Waiting
Five minutes - excitement rushes, filling the air
In a gust, like snow in January.
Four minutes - secretly whisper an avid prayer
Against time, a horrendous adversary.
Three minutes - pace unendingly, nerves hanging on,
Yet trying to smile, put on a brave face.
Two minutes - time slowing to a sunrise at dawn
In the midst of this energy, ready to race.
One minute - intense anticipation lines up now.
Murmurs of confidence and tremors of fear
Rustle in the group like timid meows.
They are ready to run like a graceful deer.
Waiting for the noise to end this pain -
The gun sounds, we run like the rain.
